"Everything you could ever want to know about waterslide temporary tattoos."
Why do people use temporary tattoos? There are too many reasons to list, but here are some of the most common. Most people just like to wear a tattoo for fun or to play a joke on a friend. Others use temporary tattoos to experiment with styles and locations before getting real tattoos. Women wear them like jewelry to accessorize their clothes. Sometimes they are used to cover a scar or old real tattoo. Children wear them to feel “grown up”.
How they are made?
Waterslide temporary tattoos are a specialized version of "waterslide decals" that are printed on sheet-feed printing presses. They are printed on decal paper, which is a heavy paper coated with a water-soluble gel. After the image is printed, a medical grade adhesive, similar to that on adhesive bandages, is applied over the image so it will bond to the skin. A special clear plastic sheet is placed over the adhesive side of the tattoo to protect it during transport and storage, again similar to what you find on an adhesive bandage. There are many variations in the actual printing process that can affect the final quality and cost of a temporary tattoo.
Japanese Paper Tattoos are manufactured with a different process that produces a more realistic appearance and lasts two or three times as long as traditional tattoos. These are the only tattoos we rate as premium grade.
Cautions to be aware of: The FDA has issued warnings that many manufacturers are not using FDA approved non-toxic ingredients. There is a risk of skin irritation with those products.
What makes quality tattoos different than budget tattoos?
Very few "manufacturers" actually print or control the printing process of the tattoos they market. When temporary tattoos first appeared in the U.S. in the eighties, the emphasis was on quality art and production that resulted in a realistic look for the tattoo. As interest in temporary tattoos grew, new suppliers entered the market, and cost became a major factor. This resulted in tattoos targeted to price points rather than quality. Many temporary tattoos in the market today are of poor quality and use bad artwork. Some are little more than stickers that stick to flesh. Others will only last a few hours before cracking or flaking off. In some cases they are not printed using FDA approved products. We strive to carry only above average and premium quality tattoos.
How long will a temporary tattoo last?
The average time for a temporary tattoo to look good is three to five days, but some people report as long as two weeks. Several factors contribute to how long the tattoo will last. Obviously, the quality of the tattoo is a major factor.
Assuming quality is equal, here are several things that affect the life of the tattoo. Natural body oils break the tattoo down over time, and rubbing from clothing wears on them from the surface. My wife can apply identical tattoos on her cleavage and ankle. The one on her cleavage starts breaking down in just a day or two, but the one on her ankle still looks good a week or so later. If you want your tattoo to last for the maximum time, you should make sure the area where you apply it is very clean and free of any oil. Clean with alcohol for best results. Avoid contamination with oils, perfumes, etc. Apply your tattoo in an area that won't be excessively rubbed by your clothing. Bathing can extend the life the life of the tattoo since that washes away oils. Wash gently with non-oily soap and pat dry. Skin type varies from one individual to another. Try an experiment by applying two tattoos of the same quality to different areas to determine what you can expect in the usable life of a temporary tattoo. Read our detailed application & care page for more information on this subject.
How do you test tattoos for quality?
We use "real world" testing to determine the quality of temporary tattoos from various manufacturers. We apply the tattoos and evaluate how well they bond to the skin and how easily the backing paper releases. We evaluate the appearance of the tattoos on flesh. Then we wear the tattoos until they degrade. Finally, we evaluate how difficult or easy it is to remove them. Based on the results, compared to our reference for above average and premium quality tattoos, we rate the quality. We only consider tattoos that rate above average or premium for addition to the Funtoos line.
